Employment with the City

The City of Charlottetown employs approximately 600 employees during the busiest season of the year (August) and approximately 400 employees in the winter months. These employees are made up of permanent staff, seasonal, casual and contract staff.

The City of Charlottetown is a full-service municipality, so these employment numbers include: Finance, Fire, Human Resources, Parks and Recreation, Planning and Heritage, Police, Public Works, Sustainability, Administration, and the Water and Sewer Utility departments.

All recruitment is handled by the Human Resources Department. Contrary to popular belief, City Council does not have a role in recruitment or hiring, other than the position of the Chief Administrative Officer.

When hiring for seasonal or casual positions, the HR department draws from the employment database. This database is created from seasonal/casual employment applications that have been completed within that calendar year.
This application form is open to everyone who is legally eligible to work in Canada and can be completed online or in-person at City Hall.

When completing a seasonal/casual application, the applicant has an opportunity to check off boxes for which department or type of work would be best suited to them. This seasonal/casual employment database is kept for the current calendar year and then refreshed, to make sure all information collected is up to date. This means that as of January 1, 2021 the database would be emptied and those interested in seasonal/casual employment in 2021 would have to reapply.

The HR Department also handles any permanent or contract job postings. Some job postings are circulated internally first, in accordance with the collective agreements. Once a job is posted publicly, the job description, salary band, and instructions on how to apply, are posted on our website at www.charlottetown.ca/employment. Along with posting employment opportunities on job bank websites, we also share the postings on our social media accounts – Facebook and Twitter.

The City of Charlottetown is an equal opportunity employer and is proud to be an inclusive workplace.
