For the second year in a row, the City of Charlottetown Water & Sewer Utility won “Best of the Best” in the Tap Water Taste Test Regional Competition for outstanding drinking water at the recent Atlantic Canada Water and Wastewater Association (ACWWA) Annual Conference.
Charlottetown Director of Community Services Richard MacEwen, who oversees the City’s utility, was also presented with the Ira P. MacNab Award at the ACWWA Conference. This award is presented annually to a member of the ACWWA for outstanding service to the water industry in Atlantic Canada.
“I’m thrilled that Charlottetown’s water has once again been recognized as the ‘Best of the Best’ in Atlantic Canada,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “This award, along with Richard MacEwen’s well-deserved Ira P. MacNab Award, is a testament to the exceptional work being done by Charlottetown Water and Sewer Utility to provide our residents with top-quality water. I have no doubt that the team will be able to bring home the “Best of the Best” trophy for a second consecutive year at the North American tasting in 2025.”
Each year, attendees at the ACWWA annual Conference are invited to bring samples of their hometown water for the “Best of the Best” Tap Water Taste Test. Samples are judged on appearance, odour, taste and overall impression. Having won first place in this year’s regional competition, Charlottetown will again have the opportunity to compete in the “Best of the Best” Tasting in North America at the American Water Works Association Conference in Denver, Colorado in 2025. Charlottetown won that North American competition for 2024 In Anaheim, California.
“It’s a great honour for our community to be recognized for having the best-tasting tap water in Atlantic Canada two years in a row,” said Councillor Bob Doiron, Chair of the Water and Sewer Committee. “This win speaks to the dedication of our Water and Sewer Utility staff. I’d also like to congratulate Richard MacEwen on this award – his leadership and commitment have been instrumental in these achievements. We’re eager to once again see Charlottetown represented on the international stage next year.”
The ACWWA Annual Conference was held in September where water and wastewater professionals met in Fredericton to learn and share best practices in the industry.
Working to ensure clean and safe drinking water for residents is part of Charlottetown’s efforts to build a sustainable and resilient city with community-focused programs and services that matter most to residents.
