Repair Work at Simmons Sports Centre Ongoing
Progress Made in Finding Location of Leak
CHARLOTTETOWN – Recent tests at the new Simmons Sports Centre have narrowed down the location of a leak that was discovered earlier this month, although the work remains ongoing.
During the final phases of construction, a leak was found to have occurred within the ice pad during the ice-making process. Since then, several different types of tests have been conducted to find the source of the leak in the piping infrastructure within the concrete ice surface slab.
This has been challenging work, given the complexity of detecting a leak within infrastructure that consists of approximately 18 kilometres of piping within the concrete surface slab.
The most recent tests completed have narrowed down the location of the leak, allowing the project team to plan for the scope of work involved with exposing the leak area and completing the necessary repairs.
“Since the issue arose, the City’s project team – including staff, contractors and professional service firms – has been working diligently to confirm the location of the leak,” said Councillor Mitchell Tweel, Chair of the Parks, Recreation and Leisure Activities Committee. “We realize the delay has created challenges for user groups who have been anticipating the opening of the centre. On behalf of the City, I want to thank them and the public for their patience and understanding.”
The City will provide updates as work on the new centre continues.
