Statement from Mayor Philip Brown Dec. 6

Mayor Philip Brown Statement on the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women
Posted on 12/06/2024
“Today, we stand together as a community to mark the National Day of Remembrance and Action on Violence Against Women. This day serves as a powerful reminder of the devastating impact of gender-based violence and of the urgent need to work towards a safer, more equitable society.

On this day, we honour the 14 women who lost their lives in the Montreal Massacre on Dec. 6, 1989 and reflect on the systemic issues that perpetuate violence against women in Canada and around the world.

As we remember these women and others who have been affected by such violence, let us also reaffirm our commitment to creating a city where everyone feels safe and valued. Addressing gender-based violence is not only about remembrance but also about taking meaningful action through education, awareness and advocacy. Together, we can foster a culture of respect, understanding and equality where women do not have to worry about their safety simply because of their gender.”
