Spring Hydrant Maintenance Program

Spring Hydrant Maintenance Program to Begin April 7
Posted on 04/04/2025
The City of Charlottetown advises residents that the Water and Sewer Utility will begin its spring hydrant maintenance program on Monday, April 7. This program will last approximately 4 to 6 weeks and will include maintenance checks and bi-annual hydrant flushing.

Hydrant flushing is considered preventative maintenance and helps keep water quality high. This seasonal program inspects flow, pressure and capacity and works to ensure the city has clean and safe drinking water.

During flushing, hydrants will be operated at full capacity for approximately 3 to 5 minutes each, until the water runs clear. Free flowing water at a high velocity ensures proper hydrant operation and flushes sediment from the pipe network. The water cannot be recaptured. Residents are reminded to stay clear of the immediate area where hydrants are being flushed. This maintenance may cause a temporary discolouration of water and/or a slight drop in water pressure.

For questions or to report an issue, please call the Water and Sewer Utility at 902-629-4014.

The Water and Sewer Utility thanks residents for their patience as the spring hydrant maintenance program is completed.
