The City is advising residents to take precautions today and tomorrow with a heat warning in effect for Prince Edward Island’s Queen’s County.

Environment Canada reports that temperatures will reach a maximum of up to 30 degrees Celsius with a humidex of 37 degrees for both today and Thursday. Minimum temperatures will hover between 17 to 20 degrees tonight with cooler temperatures returning Thursday evening.

“We’re urging residents and visitors to take action to protect themselves and vulnerable members of the community,” said Charlottetown Fire Chief Tim Mamye, who also leads the city’s Emergency Management Organization. “You may want to check on older adults, those living alone and other at-risk people you may know.”

Heat stroke is a medical emergency. Call 9-1-1 or your emergency healthcare provider right away if you or someone nearby shows signs of heat stroke. Symptoms may include red or hot skin, dizziness, nausea, confusion or loss of consciousness. While waiting for help, move the person to a cooler area, remove excess clothing, and apply cold water or ice packs to help lower their body temperature. Stay hydrated by drinking water frequently, even before you feel thirsty. Please continue to monitor alerts and forecasts issued by Environment Canada.
