Summer is a busy time on Charlottetown’s roads with an increase in visitors, more people using active transportation and seasonal construction underway. The City of Charlottetown is reminding all road users, whether they are walking, cycling or driving, of the importance of road safety.
Road users should keep the following safety practices in mind:
• Follow all traffic regulations, including speed limits.
• Be mindful of all road users, including pedestrians and cyclists. Motorists should always check for cyclists and pedestrians when turning, especially when turning right.
• Drivers should be extra alert when approaching a crosswalk. Drivers must yield to pedestrians at intersections.
• Vehicle occupants should always wear a seat belt.
• Never drive impaired. If you see an impaired driver, call 911.
• Slow down in construction zones and follow signs from crews. Always be prepared to stop suddenly when driving through construction zones.
• When approaching an intersection controlled by flashing red lights, drivers must come to a full stop and remain stopped until it is safe to proceed. Pedestrians have the right-of-way over vehicles and may enter the roadway with caution.
• When traffic signals are not functioning, drivers are required to treat the intersection as a four-way stop.
• Wear bright colours and use bike lights when cycling to be more visible to other road users.
• At a signalized pedestrian crossing, only walk across when the signals indicate it is safe to do so.
Road safety is a shared responsibility. Together, we can help ensure our city roads remain safe for all users.
