The City of Charlottetown is working to ensure essential services will continue after strike action taken today by the union representing its water and sewer workers.
“There will be no impact to water quality as we continue to focus on maintaining essential services for residents while continuing negotiations in good faith,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “The City respects the collective bargaining process and is committed to reaching a fair and responsible agreement within budget constraints.”
About 30 water and sewer staff who are members of CUPE 830 voted to strike on Monday. These workers are responsible for a range of duties including maintaining the City’s water and wastewater systems, repairing water and sewer lines, conducting inspections and responding to water main breaks. They also ensure our water supply is safe and meets Canadian Water Quality Guidelines.
They have been without a contract since December 31, 2022. The union is seeking a wage increase of 3.5 per cent each year for four years.
The City has offered 2 per cent each year, which it believes is both fair to employees and fiscally responsible for taxpayers. If accepted, the offer would mean workers in Charlottetown would earn comparable wages to others in the industry in the Maritime provinces.
Contingency plans are in place to minimize disruption to services, particularly in water distribution, wastewater management and emergency response.
“We are monitoring the situation closely and will provide updates as needed,” said Chief Administrative Officer Brad MacConnell. “We appreciate the public’s patience and understanding, and we thank all staff for their continued professionalism and dedication to serving Charlottetown residents.”
Residents who have water and sewer concerns should continue to contact the City at its service numbers during regular business hours at 902-629-4014. For after-hours emergencies, residents should call 902-626-2100. For further updates, residents can visit
