The City of Charlottetown is informing the public of the following road closures and traffic impacts resulting from Capital City Canada Day celebrations.
• Victoria Park Roadway: Closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or upon the conclusion of the event). The designated cycling lane will remain open, except for the section between the Victoria Park Pool and Kiwanis Dairy Bar between 8 a.m. and 9:30 a.m. during the Kids of Steel Triathlon.
• Victoria Park Driveway (road to tennis courts): Closed to all traffic from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or upon the conclusion of the event).
• Forbes Kennedy Way and the attached parking lot (adjacent to Victoria Park ballfields): Closed to the public from 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. (or upon the conclusion of the event).
There will be no parking permitted for the day along Brighton Road between Ambrose Street and Queen Elizabeth Drive, as well as the intersection of Brighton Road and Queen Elizabeth Drive. In addition, there will be no parking permitted for the day on Greenfield Avenue, Goodwill Avenue, Century Terrace and Ambrose Street out of respect for the residents living in the area. Parking violations may result in a ticket or towing at the vehicle owner’s expense.
Canada Day attendees are encouraged to use active transportation or public transit when travelling to and from the events in Victoria Park, to help reduce traffic congestion. Motorists are reminded to please use extra caution, as an increase in cyclists and pedestrians throughout the city should be expected.
For Canada Day, July 1, the Victoria Park Pool and Splash Pad will be open from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., and the Kiwanis Dairy Bar will operate from 10 a.m. to 11 p.m.
Transit services will be operating on an adjusted schedule for Canada Day; please visit T3 Transit’s Website to view the full schedule and route map. Free evening shuttles will be running to help residents and visitors access the celebrations:
• All T3 Transit service is free beginning at 6:45 p.m. Regular fares of $2 apply before that time, or riders may use their monthly pass.
• T3 Transit will operate on a customized Canada Day schedule based on the regular Saturday service, with extended evening hours.
• Route 1 along University Avenue will operate every 15 minutes from 10 a.m. until the final departure from downtown at 11:15 p.m.
• Routes 2, 3, and 23 will operate hourly until 9:45 p.m., serving West Royalty, Spring Park, Brighton, Sherwood, Parkdale, and Hillsborough Park.
• Following the fireworks, buses on Routes 1, 2, 3 and 23 will depart from Terry Fox Drive and Rochford Square. Transit buses will be given priority to depart first. For safety, traffic control personnel will temporarily hold vehicle traffic exiting the Government of P.E.I. parking lot until buses have departed and peak pedestrian and cyclist traffic has cleared.
• Riders are encouraged to use Google Maps or the Transit app to plan their trip.
For those who choose to drive, carpooling is encouraged. Public parking is available at the Government of PEI lot on Terry Fox Drive, and the Queen Street and Fitzroy Street Parkades will be open and free of charge to motorists. The Queen’s Wharf parking lot will be open and Peakes Quay lot will be automated and charge per hour.
Bike Friendly Communities PEI will be on-site in Victoria Park operating free bike valet parking, accepting all forms of wheeled transportation, including bicycles, strollers, scooters, and skateboards.
All Capital City Canada Day activities are weather dependent. Any cancellations or updates due to weather will be shared on the City’s social media platforms, including Facebook @CityofCharlottetown and Instagram @city_of_charlottetown.
Residents who may be sensitive to sound, including those with young children and pets, are reminded that a 21-Gun Salute will take place at the Prince Edward Battery (Victoria Park cannons) at 12 p.m., and the fireworks display will occur over Charlottetown Harbour at 10 p.m.
