The City of Charlottetown's annual Waste Reduction Week will take place Oct. 19 to 25, inspiring the community to come together and take action to reduce waste.

City Hall Light Display

Date: Oct. 19 to 25

Location: Charlottetown City Hall, 199 Queen Street

Details: Stop by City Hall after dark to view the bell tower lit up green and blue in celebration of Waste Reduction Week.

Battery Drive

Date:

Location: Charlottetown City Hall, 199 Queen Street

Details: Recycle your old batteries by dropping them off in the collection box located in the front lobby of City Hall at 199 Queen St. All participants will have a chance grab some Recycle Your Batteries Canada swag.

Learn to Mend Workshop

Date: Tuesday, Oct. 20

Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Location: The Gallery Coffee House and Bistro, 82 Great George Street
Details: Join local seamstress, Hope Rector, for a free hands-on workshop to learn a variety of beginner-friendly, hand sewing and mending techniques. Bring your own piece of clothing to repair with guidance from the workshop instructor. Each participant will receive their own sewing kit to use at the workshop and to take home with them.

Pre-register for the workshop at Charlottetown.ca/WasteWeek. Space is limited. Interested participants should register as soon as possible.

Trash to Treasure Craft Station

Date: Thursday, Oct. 22

Time: 5 to 6:30 p.m.

Location: Charlottetown Library Learning Centre Makerspace, 97 Queen Street

Details: Families are invited to join City staff at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre’s Makerspace to turn discarded and unwanted materials into creative works of art. All materials will be provided but participants are welcome to bring their own clean waste to use. Get creative and see what you can make from items that would otherwise go to a landfill.

Food Waste Reduction Workshop

Date: Friday, Oct. 23

Time: 6 to 7:30 p.m.

Location: Holland College Tourism and Culinary Centre, 4 Sydney Street

Details: Learn simple, safe, and budget-friendly ways to extend the life of your food and cut waste at home from Chef Michael Bryanton and Chef Eliott Senechal. This live session covers planning, storage, and preservation methods from fridge and freezer hacks to quick pickles, dehydration basics, and safe canning principles, so you can keep food fresh longer, use what you buy, and save money.

Representatives from Island Waste Management Corporation will be on site to provide a short presentation on how food waste is processed and where it ends up, as well as answer questions and share information on proper waste sorting and recycling.

Fix-It Fair

Date: Saturday, Oct. 24

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Location: Simmons Sports Centre Multipurpose Room, 170 North River Road

Details: Give your broken items a renewed life at the Fix-It Fair. Skilled Fixers have volunteered to repair various household items for free. They will not only repair your broken items but also share their knowledge so participants can perform similar repairs at home.

Representatives from Island Waste Management Corporation will be on site to provide information and resources on proper waste sorting and recycling.

Participants may bring in one item, such as a small appliance, a bike, or piece of clothing, to be repaired. For more information about what can be fixed, or to sign up and volunteer, visit Charlottetown.ca/FixItFair.

Free Clothing Swap

Date: Sunday, October 25

Time: 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Location: Simmons Sports Centre Multipurpose Room, 170 North River Road

Details: Members of the public are invited to take part in a free clothing swap, hosted by the City, with support from Wild Child PEI. We will be accepting early drop-offs at the Bell Aliant Centre, 560 University Avenue, and Voluntary Resource Centre, 81 Prince Street, from October 17 to 23 during regular business hours.

Donations will also be accepted at the actual event. Participants are not required to donate to participate.
