Citizens Honoured for Community Contributions

Mayor Philip Brown and Charlottetown City Council celebrated the achievements of residents who have made a significant impact in the community at an awards ceremony on July 30.

Held as part of the Natal Day Weekend celebrations for the City's 171st birthday, the event took place at the Charlottetown Library Learning Centre to honour volunteers and community members who have devoted their time and efforts to making Charlottetown a better place to live, work and play.

“These awards recognize the people whose kindness, generosity, and dedication help make Charlottetown a better place every day,” said Mayor Philip Brown. “Whether through volunteer service, community leadership, or taking pride in the places we share, each recipient has made a meaningful difference in the lives of others. Their commitment reminds us that strong communities are built by people who care.”

“The efforts we are celebrating help shape the character of our city,” said Councillor Terry Bernard, Chair of the Economic, Tourism and Cultural Development Committee. “From vibrant neighbourhoods and welcoming public spaces to stronger community connections, these contributions enhance Charlottetown in countless ways and help create a city that residents are proud to call home.”

The Citizen Recognition Awards recognize extraordinary Charlottetown residents who go above and beyond to positively impact the people and community around them. This year, two residents were recognized: Mabel Chu and Josiah Adawari. Guided by a strong belief in “building bridges”, Mabel Chu has dedicated years of service to making Charlottetown a more welcoming, inclusive and connected community. As president of Canada Day Drumming PEI, she has led initiatives that celebrate diversity, foster cross-cultural understanding and showcase Charlottetown on a national and international stage.

Josiah Adawari was recognized for his exceptional leadership, community service, and commitment to civic engagement. Through his advocacy, volunteerism, and support of local organizations and initiatives, he has encouraged greater community participation, strengthened connections among residents, and inspired others to become active contributors to Charlottetown's future.

The Forbes Kennedy Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award was established in 2019 in honour of Forbes Kennedy, a former Canadian professional ice hockey player who sadly passed away earlier this year at the age of 90. Forbes Kennedy approached his 30-year on-ice career with commitment and determination, and the annual award is presented to a community member who has made a positive impact and shows the same dedication and determination exemplified by "Forbie" himself. The 2026 Forbes Kennedy Memorial Volunteer of the Year Award was presented to Kendell and Lynn Palmer.

For more than a decade, the couple has devoted countless hours to supporting minor hockey on Prince Edward Island through their leadership with the Sherwood Metros of the Township Island Junior Hockey League. Together, they have mentored young athletes and created opportunities for players to succeed both on and off the ice.

The City of Charlottetown David “Eli” MacEachern Bursary was established in recognition of Prince Edward Island's first Olympic Gold Medalist, Charlottetown native David “Eli” MacEachern. It is presented annually to a student graduating from Charlottetown Rural High School, Colonel Gray High School or École François-Buote, who is dedicated to excellence in sports during their high school years. The 2026 recipient is Alyson Scott, a graduate of Colonel Gray High School. A standout multi-sport athlete, Alyson represented Prince Edward Island at the 2025 Canada Games in women's soccer, captained her U17 team to a national silver medal, and was named a First Team All-Star. She will begin a Bachelor of Science in Kinesiology at UPEI this fall.

The Make Our Hometown Beautiful program recognizes residents, businesses and community groups who contribute time and effort to maintain beautiful buildings and landscapes.
