City Launches Pre-Approved Housing Design Program

The City of Charlottetown has officially launched its Pre-Approved Housing Design Program, a new initiative designed to make it easier and faster for residents and builders to create additional housing using pre-approved accessory dwelling unit (ADU) designs.

Developed as part of the City’s commitments under the Housing Accelerator Fund, the program includes a range of ready-to-build housing designs that comply with building code requirements and municipal regulations. The focus is on ADUs and other forms of gentle infill that can help increase housing supply within existing neighbourhoods.

“Housing affordability is one of the biggest challenges facing communities across Canada. While there is no single solution, municipalities have a responsibility to remove barriers wherever we can. This program gives access to professionally designed plans that can save both time and money while helping create more housing within our existing neighbourhoods,” said Deputy Mayor Alanna Jankov. “As chair of the Planning and Heritage Committee, I’m proud of the work Council and staff have done to bring this initiative forward. It’s a practical tool that supports gentle infill while helping homeowners contribute to Charlottetown’s housing supply.”

An ADU is a self-contained secondary housing unit located on the same property as a primary residence. ADUs can provide flexible housing options for a variety of needs, including affordable rental units, accommodation for family members and multigenerational living arrangements.

The program was developed in consultation with residents, industry stakeholders, and the local building community.

Eligibility for some properties will depend on the approval of the City’s forthcoming Zoning and Development Bylaw.
